OUR TRIOS DOWN TO TWO!

I think I did learn the objectives that were in the syllabus but I didn’t learn what I had hoped to learn in the class. I will still work on the shape of the face, hands, and feet because those are the hardest things for me.

I have definitely improved even more in the number of lines I use for cross contour. I started doing a billion and now I think I have a good amount. I think I have gotten better at making lighter lines in gesture drawings because I couldn’t get a good picture of some of the gestures. So that must mean they were light. I think that I got better in the last shell trying to get the angle down. It was hard to get the shell to look like it was going back in space not pointing up. I think that everything that was said on the midterm was fine. I just don’t think that so much emphasis should be put on the mannequin being smooth. I would sit forever trying to smooth it and nothing would really help. It should just matter that the muscles are right. I will use what I learned in the class for personal uses but not for my major. I just like to draw on my own time and I think it will just help to know things in other fields then the computer stuff.

let me know if the link doesnt work.

woah! is that my drawing......why yes it is!

so one of the days that we drew skulls we were also talking about our shell drawings. i was spinning around in a chair and saw this drawing and i really liked it. i thought to myself thats a cool drawing who did that. it took a couple more turns to remember that that was my drawing! i was proud.
i think the skulls really helped me. i wish we would have started on the skull a little earlier. since now we have to do a self portrait it would have been nice to draw someone's face right after doing these drawings to test what i learned.
so wish me luck on my self portrait. :)

I used to be a hand model didnt you know.....

there was a day that we just did hands. it was super hard but it kind of helped. it helped in finding the angles of the fingers and knuckles and making sure the hands dont look disfigured. i kind of wished that we had done this with the actual models cause they know how to hold still better. and we would have been able to do longer hand drawings. the person modeling didnt want to stay still for more then ten mins.

Natalie still runs LA!

This is Natalie almost done. i dont think its done in this pic. i hope not cause im not liking what i am seeing so far.......
doing these mannequins has helped a little bit for drawing people. pretty much only the main ones that you see on almost everyone are the ones that helped the rest were mean little things that didnt match the ones in the book. and they were just frustrating.

Crooked Moss

This is my third shell. it was just bad all around. the lines were wrong but i didnt know how to fix it and i didnt leave any white space of the paper. i just went over it with white conte. i didnt even think of leaving any of the paper color when i did the ink wash. i liked the green that i chose :)

Sketchy sketch sketch

I havent really had anything to write about for a couple weeks. I have been taking pictures though. And i have decided that since i can't figure out if, week by week, i am learning anything worth writing then i will talk about my drawings and see if any magic epiphany happens :)
This is my second shell drawing. i liked it. the angle wasnt as good as i wanted it. compared to my other shell the amount of lines has gotten WAY better. i used to do a billion lines.

LETS GO CATCH A SQUIRREL!

So far in Life Drawing i have learned more about the ribs. I have also learned a bunch about the proportion of the body with the box method that we just learned. I now also know where the "spine line" on the front is, which is very helpful when the model faces forward. Some things that i have found helpful is blind contour, contour line drawings, and the quick rib , hip and spine drawings. The blind contour makes you more aware of what you are drawing. Contour line drawings have helped me look more closely at plane changes and can help un-flatten a drawing. The rib, hip, and spine drawings i think do really help but i dont think we need to do soooooo many of them. Some of my weaknesses are that i cant do one thing over and over and over....and over again. It brings back bad memories of Drawing 1 where we only drew chairs and it was horrible. I also have problems making a drawing that took me 30 seconds suddenly take 2-5 minutes. Early in the semester when we did continuous line drawings i did WAY to many lines but i have been working on that and i think it has been a successful journey. Some of my strengths are that i think i can see small details and plane changes well enough.
i just want to learn how to draw people. Right now you could tell me to draw a rib cage connected to a hip shaped thing and boom i could do it. But to actually draw a real person or a photograph i dont think i could. I dont think this class will really get into faces, but that is what i want to learn to draw. my faces are horrible and i can only to half a face i cant connect the two halves together and make it look good. Life drawing learning hasn't really flowed on to other classes. But in drawing 1 we did line drawings and negative space drawings and that kind of reminds me of life drawing.

"I don't know how to organize thoughts. I don't know how to have thoughts."

While walking though the Walker i picked Jasper Johns Fool's House, painted in 1962. It is oil on canvas with objects, and it is 72 x 36 in. The objects on it are a broom, a towel, a cup hanging on a hook, and a canvas stretcher. Johns also labeled everything with a marker.
I picked this one because i liked the sweeping marks in the paint from the broom. And because of the colors. This piece was shown and talked about a lot in my art history class. So it was pretty cool to see something like that in real life.

I RUN LD!

This is my life drawing mannequin that i named Natalie. Cause Natalie is the biggest baddest mannequin on the counter top! ha ha ha
So far we have done some of the neck muscles and the ab muscles. I thought the neck muscles were fine when i was doing them. The book was kind of confusing so I had to guess. But i only had to change a few things, but then the clay kind of just squished together and it was hard to define the muscles again. For the abs i just have to fill in a massive hole that i for some reason have. lol I guess that Natalie got shot in a drive by or something.
The last week of classes not much has happened since we didnt have class one day. But the drawing is going ok. Drawing slow is a big obstacle for me and hopefully i can draw slow when i need to. I like cross contour way more then the sketching where we only do the spine and ribs. My drawing was pretty cool, it looked like wood.

she sells sea shells .....

The shell that I have is a conch shell. A conch shell has a hard, protective outer layer. The shell is an exoskeleton usually of an animal that doesn’t have a backbone, or an invertebrate. It is in the family Stombidae. The word “conch” is from the Greek word for any kind of shellfish or their shells. The first use in English is from 1398 basically saying that all water animals with shells are called conch. Over time it changed to where conch was used for the shells of different kinds of large sea snails. The shells are pointed on both ends.

A person that studies mollusks is called malacologists or conchology. Conch meat is second in popularity in edible snails, first is escargot. In El Salvador live conch is served in a cocktail of onion, tomato, and cilantro. Then lemon juice is squeezed on it and the conch squirms and then the whole thing is slurped down like oysters. Conch shells produce pearls that are white, brown, pink, and orange. In Mayan art conch shells were used as paint and ink holders for elite scribes. Conch shells are also used as bugles or trumpets in many cultures. In some Caribbean and African cemeteries conch shells are put on graves. In Grenada fishermen use a conch shell to tell the community that they have fish for sale. Conch shells and pearls are used in souvenirs or jewelry all over the world. But fragments or whole conch shells can’t be taken home by tourists from “non complying countries” and can be confiscated in customs. In the UK conch shells are the ninth most seized import.

1st reflection........

Life drawing class is going ok so far. It was going better in the beginning but I just couldn't draw the spinal column right. Hopefully next week I will get it down and I will be happier about my drawings. The drawing above is a continuous line drawing that i was pretty happy about. Below is a combination of continuos line and contour line drawing.

WOAH trippy........

For my blind contour drawing I was looking at an elbow and worked my way up to the face. I also did the feet. My lines don’t really describe my drawing they pretty much just outlined it with a little bit of lines that describe the figure more. My first reaction was “WOAH” when I first saw my drawing. I didn’t think it was that bad but I like to see what I am drawing. Curly. Frantic. Different.

Squirrels are my fav :D

Hello. My name is Jamie. I am a student at Graphic Design student at UW Stout. This blog is for my life drawing class, which i am excited about. I have always tried to draw people but never had much luck. In this class I hope to learn how to connect all the parts of the body and have it look natural. Here is some work i have already done. Enjoy :)
